The Truth about Bronzers & Self-Tanners

Try as you might, there’s no denying that our tans look anything but impressive during the cooler months. Summertime however, brings a chance at redemption, at least as far as our tans are concerned. Most of us I hope have been enjoying the sun (with the use of sunscreen of course) but if you haven’t been as lucky, all is not lost. There’s still a way to get that glow!

Now that summer is here, it’s the perfect time to show your skin some love. Whether your color comes natural, from the sun, or is store bought, we all can achieve that “spent two weeks in the Bahamas” look.

If you can’t quite dare to bare- allow me to give you the SKINny on a few products that will jumpstart your tan.

The Truth about Bronzers
• Typically worn on the face
• Available in powder and liquid form (powder: loose or pressed)
• Effect is subtle, gives the appearance of sun kissed skin
• Easy to build up color (powder), slightly easier to remove (powder) *with the use of a fan brush
• Available in a variety of shades to match many skin tones
• Available in shimmer and non-shimmer finishes
• Widely available at drugstores up to specialty stores/locations

The Truth about Self-Tanners
• Can be worn on both the body and face (separate products)
• Available in liquid form (lotions/creams, spray/aerosol methods)
• Can stain clothes and skin (tinted tanners)
• Easy to build up color, nearly impossible to remove without completely washing the surface
• Available in a variety of shades to match many skin tones
• Available in shimmer and non-shimmer finishes
• Widely available at drugstores up to specialty stores/locations

Favorite Face Product:
Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Bronzing Powder. When applied to the face, it gives the appearance of a subtle tan without the sun. When used to contour, bronzer gives the face a slimming illusion… who wouldn’t love that? *Contouring hides areas of the face you don’t want as pronounced, while highlighting others in which you do. It contains no shimmer, my favorite aspect, resulting in a flattering finished look. Available at Sephora, Sephora.com and specialty makeup counters ($28).

Favorite Body Products:

Jegerns Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer. Available in fair to medium and medium to tan skin tones. The moisturizer has a built in skin-darkening complex that gradually creates natural looking color in as little as 7 days. It also contains a collagen and elastin formula that firms the skin, thus reducing the appearance of cellulite. It brightens skin for a healthy glow. Available at drugstores.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs. Available in Light Glow, Medium Glow, Tan Glow and Deep Glow. For specific use on the legs, this wonder in a can contains Palmaria Extract which helps in covering any imperfections while giving you even, healthy looking color. The trick to achieving natural looking color is to spray lightly. Contains a slight shimmer noticeable only in direct sunlight. Dries within minutes and is water-resistant. Available at drugstores.

If your journey to a perfect tan begins here, I hope you found these tidbits helpful. If you plan on going the natural route, make sure to apply sunscreen often and drink lots of water. Happy tanning!
